AVALLEN PACKAGING AWARDS
- WORLD’S BEST CALVADOS
JUNE, 2020
PRESS RELEASE
WONDERWORKS COMMUNICATIONS’ WORK WINS
WORLD’S BEST CALVADOS DESIGN
Specialist drinks marketing agency, Wonderworks Communications, has had its work with bee-friendly Avallen Calvados, the world’s most planet positive spirit, recognised at this year’s World Calvados Awards. The team have won the World’s Best Calvados Design, as well as a Gold award for their label design and launch.
Wonderwork Communication’s brief for Avallen was to launch a brand that both reinvigorated a declining Calvados category and championed the plight of the declining global bee population, positioning Avallen as the world’s most sustainable spirit.
The team defined an authentic visual tone of voice for the packaging and brand materials which created a genuine emotional connection with drinks trade and consumers alike. Driving consideration, trial and ultimately love for the brand.
Visual storytelling was at the heart of the brand creation, with an illustration style and engaging visual narrative that conveyed an approachable, premium and ownable tone of voice. A strong and flexible brand mark honours the traditional name (‘Avallen’ is Cornish for apple tree), but has a unique modern edge. The illustration has been fully developed to do the storytelling across all touchpoints of the brand - from packaging through to POS, training materials and event activation.
Sarah Wildman-King and Miranda Hart, founders of specialist drinks marketing agency, Wonderworks Communications, said:
“Steph and Tim came to us with their ambition to launch a category disruptor, with a mission to be the most sustainable spirit in the world. Our role has been to harness their driving brand purpose and idea for the liquid and bring this to life for global consumers. We’re absolutely delighted to be recognised with this award.”
Tim Etherington-Judge, Co-founder of Avallen Spirits, added:
“In a drinks industry full of stark Scandinavian minimalism and lookalike brands, Wonderwork’s work on Avallen is fun, refreshing and simply gorgeous. They completely understood our mission and brand ethos, and I’ve lost count of how many compliments I’ve received on the design.”
The World Calvados Awards are the global awards selecting the very best in all the international recognised styles, promoting the World’s best calvados to consumers and trade across the globe.
Wonderworks Communications has already been recognised with a number of other awards for its work with Avallen Calvados in its first year of operation:
Spirits Business Award 2019 Master in the Design & Packaging Masters
SpiritsBusiness Award 2019 Winner in the Innovation in Packaging Awards.

WONDERWORKS COMMUNICATIONS: Wonderworks Communications was co-founded by Sarah Wildman-King and Miranda Hart after they met working on Thailand’s biggest whisky brand. It is a specialist full-service drinks branding and creative agency, with a global client base whom they help create transformative brand growth. In addition to Avallen, about which they are so passionate that they now own a minority stake, they work with premium global brands including Jim Beam, Courvoisier, Roku Gin, Mathieu Teisseire and the London Essence Company.
AVALLEN SPIRITS: Avallen Spirits is a company with environment positivity at its core, making calvados from nothing but apples, water and time. Avallen Calvados is completely natural with no additives or added sugar. Avallen's liquid, which is aged in French oak barrels for 2 years, is fresh, fruity and proudly apple forward in its flavour profile.
It is biodiversity that inspired them to build a program to help bee populations around the world with their #BeePositive message, donating €0.50 of profit for every bottle sold to organisations dedicated to restoring and protecting the most important of insects, as well as commitment to plant 10,000 wild flowers over the next 3 years across the globe in aid of helping our forever declining bee population.
